BECOME LIVING LEGENDS: TRIBUTE TO MLK AND CORETTA SCOTT-KING
Today, January 15th, 2012 we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.- an icon, legend, and dear friend to many. However, I can't help but to think of Coretta Scott- King as well. MLK's wife, avid supporter to, and mother to their family of four. Coretta stood beside Martin during the civil rights movement and even became the first to major in Elementary Education. Coretta Scott-King was also a civil rights activist and a exemplary regal woman in African-American culture.
On January 15th we observe Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, but we must also stop to acknowledge Coretta on this date also, as it marks the founding of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated whom Mrs. Scott King is a honorary member of.
Together they fought to ensure that not only their children, but generations to come would benefit from their struggle. I chose to highlight them as a couple, because it seems that as 21st century males and females we are loosing sight of what it meant to work together, and the true role of the Black Family. As we continue to push through one of the worst crisis our generation will see economically; we are doing ourselves a huge injustice by not looking at the examples of our past. If we take a look back towards the civil rights movement or even further back in the times of The Great Depression unity and loyatly was more prevalent. We pulled together, built teams, and created stronger unions which later gave birth to true movements to overcome the obstacles and challenges that we were faced with.
In our generation it seems as we have truly lost focus. The things we grew up reading, and idolizing in MLK and many others has little to no appeal in our lives and community. We are more superficial, than meaningful in our pursuit of relationships, our approach to careers, and professional associations. One thing about history, its always said to repeat itself and we can only learn by revisiting what was done prior.
I am challenging all of my 21-st century African-American men and women to change this starting today. Let's remember what it was to come together, and build instead of hate on each other. Men -remember what it was to honor and respect women, and if you don't know do your research. Idolize men like King instead of entertainers. Ladies, let's remember what it meant to be supportive as well as independent and what it meant to keep somethings sacred for your husband. Let's remember when "it took a village to raise a child" you are just as responsible for your neighbors than you are for your own.
In 2012, let's hold ourselves accountable for more than the cars we drive, where we live, the clothes, the designer handbags, shoes and all the material things. The time is now! Let's become moguls, living legends. Let's INSPIRE, BUILD and CREATE. DO IT today. DO IT for you. DO IT for KING.
